One thing that the military will drill into your skull is the idea of 360 degree security, all the time. It's a notion that I believe carries over to civilian life as well. The idea is, that the world we live in is 360 degrees around us at all times, and we should have eyes on it at all times. Now, obviously, we can only look in one direction at a time. The idea is though, to be constantly watchful of our surroundings... all of them. Just like many people don't often check their mirrors when they drive down the highway, most people don't pay attention to their 3,6, and 9 o'clock when they move throughout their day.
Where do you sit when you go to a restaurant? How do you walk around the corner of a building on the sidewalk? How do you walk up to your car to get in after being in the store? If we acknowledge the idea that a threat can happen at any time from any direction, these are things we have to think through. Sit at a corner table with a wall behind you where you can see the entrance and at least one exit. When going around a corner on the sidewalk, have as much “stand-off” from the building as you can to see down the next side of the building, as well as the sidewalk you just came down. When you come back to your car from being in the store, don't just walk straight to the driver's door, walk behind the car, around the passenger side and front, then get in and go on your way. These may sound like time consuming, unnecessary tasks, but they are all things that I do every day to try and maintain that 360 security.
At the end of the day, it's a mindset. Either you accept that an attack can come at any time, from any direction... or you don't. If you do, in fact, accept that as a real possibility in the world we live in, but you aren't willing to take any extra steps to develop 360 degrees of security and awareness, then you are fooling yourself into thinking, “It will never happen to me.” If you want to be serious about self defense and being a responsible carrier/ gun owner, having a 360 degree security mindset and actions is an absolute must! Very simple little changes to the way you carry out your day can mean the difference between spotting a threat ahead of time, or being blindsided... between surviving an attack, or not. Stay vigilante, continue training, and be willing to make those little changes that could mean the difference at the end of the day!
